The house is designed for a family with small children. The owner would like to have a living space which can be passively cooled, a house with less footprint but optimal for their functional requirements, and plenty of space for their kids to play and learn. The site is located in a gated environment and therefore security fence is not needed but privacy has become a concern. In the design process of this house, the architect and environmental designer have focused on 3 major issues: land use and open space, future house expansion, and integrated environmental design.KWWN_05

The house is pushed towards the front of the site to allow for space at the back for green area and children play area. This area suffices to be used in case of future expansion when the children grow up. The massing longitudinal axis is oriented north-south in response to the sun and prevailing wind from the south. The protruding mass in the front and the back is designed to catch summer and winter seasonal wind while also provides shading for the front and back terrace at different times of day, allowing all day space usage. Landscape design – planting selection and location – helps to provide additional shading and cooling effect.
