PERSPECTIVE

Designing
a Learning Environment

Raintree International School Sathorn Expansion

We believe that a thoughtfully designed learning environment plays a vital role in a child’s development. Beyond supporting academic outcomes, school environments influence children’s wellbeing, social interaction, creativity, and their relationship with the world around them.

Our approach to school design is human-centered, climate-responsive, and informed by educational research. We create environments that support learning, delight the senses, and promote wellbeing for students, teachers, and staff across all age groups. By integrating architecture, interiors, landscape, and environmental graphics, we deliver cohesive learning environments that are adaptable, sustainable, and deeply connected to their context.

In dense urban settings where land is limited, we prioritize efficient use of space through multi-functional areas, flexible layouts, and courtyards that serve as both social and environmental assets. Our schools are designed not only to accommodate learning, but to actively support it — today and into the future.

Early Years

Learning Through Environment, Nature, and Play

In early childhood education, the learning environment plays a critical role in brain development and emotional growth. We design preschool environments as a child’s “third teacher” — spaces that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a sense of safety.

Through biophilic design, natural materials, and strong indoor–outdoor connections, we reconnect children with nature even within urban campuses. Spaces are designed to encourage exploration, cooperation, and interaction, helping children develop respect for one another and for their environment. These environments aim to create joyful learning experiences and lasting childhood memories.

Primary

Supporting Growth, Interaction, and Choice

SBS International School

For primary students, learning environments must support a growing range of activities, learning styles, and social interactions. We design spaces that balance structure with flexibility — classrooms, courtyards, and shared spaces that can adapt to different teaching approaches and group sizes.

Natural daylight, ventilation, and greenery are carefully integrated to support wellbeing and focus. Semi-outdoor and multi-purpose spaces allow students to move, collaborate, and learn beyond the classroom, fostering independence and engagement while making efficient use of limited land area.

Secondary

Flexibility for Change, Collaboration, and Future Learning

Secondary education requires environments that can evolve alongside changing curricula, teaching methods, and student needs. Our design approach emphasizes flexibility, adaptability, and shared learning.

Learning spaces are conceived with characteristics of co-working environments — supporting individual study, group collaboration, informal learning, and social interaction. Loose furniture, adaptable layouts, and multi-functional spaces allow schools to respond to disruption, technological change, and evolving educational models. By maximizing spatial efficiency and flexibility, we help urban schools prepare students for a future defined by change.

Our design approach brings together wellbeing, adaptability, and creativity. By creating spaces that support investigation, expression, documentation, and reflection, we enable learning to take place across diverse scenarios and over time.

This ensures that each environment remains responsive, purposeful, and capable of supporting evolving educational needs.
